A lesson in fairness

I was caring for a young male recently, and was struck by his gorgeous eyelashes. They were so long that they almost looked fake.

I thought about how unfair it is that I have to use mascara and my eyelashes don't come anywhere close. Guys always seem to luck out.

Then I thought about how this poor kid has bones broken throughout his body, a feeding tube in his nose and doesn't know where he is or why he is in so much pain. He is in locked restraints or three of his limbs because he not only managed to pull out multiple tubes, but he also unhooked his traction and tried to go for a walk. He's not even twenty, and I can't tell you how much function he will regain.

Yeah, I guess I'm not going to whine about my eyelashes right now.

Did he experience a brain injury, too? I remember (or remember stories of me) pulling off my monitors to try to get to the water at the sink. I was thirsty. I saw water. Water = not thirsty anymore. Maybe your patient was experiencing something similar?
